Cell Applications, Inc. Welcomes Scientific Advisers
SAN DIEGO, Dec 4, 2015 -- To maintain leadership in primary cell biology and engage with experts, Cell Applications, Inc. has organized a group of Scientific Advisers to participate in a roundtable discussion with peers and CAI company leadership. The participants will summarize respective research interests, while incorporating perspective on cell-based approaches and emerging technologies.  Such interaction will help CAI stay abreast of trends, methods and advances from diverse fields of study, and ultimately overcome challenges, fulfil unmet needs, realize new opportunities and energize the pace and scope of discovery.  We are excited this top-notch group of scientists will be engaging with CAI.

Ann Bang, PhD, Director, Cell Biology, Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics. Dr. Anne Bang’s work is focused on the application of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells to translational research and development. Dr. Bang joined the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in June 2010 as Director of Cell Biology at the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics.  Her current research efforts are directed at developing patient-specific, and iPSC-based disease models for drug screening, with an emphasis on neurological and neuromuscular disease. Her group has conducted drug screens on muscular dystrophy patient cells, and hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and neurons, including from Alzheimer’s patient specific hiPSC.  Previously, as Director of Stem Cell Research at ViaCyte Inc, her team worked to develop human embryonic stem cells as a replenishable source of pancreatic cells to treat diabetes.  Her efforts focused on optimization of the differentiation process, and then on advancing the cell therapy product into development, scaled manufacturing, product characterization and safety assessment. Dr. Bang has over 20 years of experience in developmental biology, with a focus on neural development.  She received a B.S. from Stanford, a Ph.D. in Biology from UCSD, and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Salk Institute.

Jennifer O. Manilay
, PhD, Associate Professor and Chair, Molecular and Cell Biology Unit, University of California, Merced.  Dr. Manilay’s research experience has focused on developmental immunology, with additional work in stem cell research, cell fate decisions and new projects in osteoimmunology that investigate the cellular and molecular interactions between cells of the bone and hematopoietic lineages.  Dr. Manilay’s work has been funded by NIH and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine.  Dr. Manilay is a founding faculty member of UC Merced, the newest campus of the University of California system.  There, she has demonstrated academic and administrative leadership in collaborative research, teaching, accreditation, managing budgets, mentoring and establishing partnerships with the community.  With a passion for lifelong learning and discovery, her personal mission includes excellent teaching, training, empathetic mentorship, and risk-taking, in order to leave a legacy of service to enable others to realize their full potential.  After completing her PhD in Immunology (Medical Sciences) at Harvard, Dr. Manilay completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UC Berkeley.

Gene Yeo, PhD
, MBA, Associate Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of California San Diego.  Dr. Yeo has expertise in RNA processing, computational biology, genomics, neurological diseases, virology and stem cells.  He holds bachelor degrees in chemical engineering and economics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, an MBA from the Rady School of Management at UCSD, and a PhD in Computational Neuroscience from MIT.  In addition to his role at UCSD, Gene has a visiting appointment at the National University of Singapore.  In 2011, Dr. Yeo was awarded the Alfred P Sloan Fellowship for his work in computational molecular biology. Dr. Yeo is an author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications, invited book chapters, review articles, and has also served as Editor on several books. Dr. Yeo is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, the ALS Association, Genentech and Roche Pharmaceuticals.  Dr. Yeo also serves on the Scientific Advisory Boards of biotech companies, consults to biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and has founded start-ups in the biotechnology space.
