Human Osteoblasts, HOb, are isolated from normal human bone. They are cryopreserved at second passage and can be cultured and propagated for at least 10 population doublings. HOb sythesizes bone matrix. Matrix mineralization can be induced in the presence of ascorbic acid and B-Glycerophosphate. These cells are commonly used for micro- and macroscopic investigations of the skeletal system, such as the effects of inflammatory mediators,1 the effects of bone morphogenic proteins,2 the physiological control of bone remodeling,3 the regulation of bone metabolism,4 and the study of the chemicals associated with physical trauma.5
