Chondrocytes in monolayer culture lose their phenotypic characteristics very quickly and become de-differentiated to a fibroblast-like phenotype1,2,3. Cartilage-specific Type II Collagen expression cannot be detected in these de-differentiated chondrocytes4. Now, Cell Applications provides Re-Differentiated Chondrocytes by encapsulating chondrocytes in an alginate bead suspension. These Re-Differentiated Chondrocytes produce their phenotypic marker Aggrecan and Type II Collagen again14,5. Cells are shipped 10 days after encapsulation. Re-Differentiated Choncdocytes are expected 3 weeks after encapsulation and should retain their phenotypic characteristics for at least one week after complete re-differentiation. These cells have been used for the repair of cartilage defects6.
