Rat Aortic Endothelial Cells (RAOEC) are isolated from aorta of healthy adult rats. They are cryopreserved at third passage and can be cultured and propagated to sixth passage and beyond without losing their morphologic and phenotypic characteristics. RAOEC is a relevant in vitro model for correlating with in vivo studies in rat as an animal model. RAOEC have been used as a model for the study of Atherosclerosis1 and products synthesized by the endothelium2,3. The interaction of aortic endothelium and smooth muscle cells regulate the level and distribution of glycosaminoglycans in the arterial wall, especially in the intima4. Co-culture of aortic endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells provide an ideal in vitro model for studying the interaction between these two cells types.
