Description

Chicken Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (CAOSMC) are specialized primary cell types isolated from avian cardiovascular tissue, specifically characterized by positive α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA; ACTA2) expression. These primary aortic smcs (often evaluated alongside alternative model systems derived from the mouse or compared with human aorta preparations) provide a classical avian in vitro model for studying vascular smooth muscle biology and cardiovascular-relevant responses in systemic vessels across the thoracic and abdominal aortic segments.

To maintain experimental integrity and culture fidelity, rigorous quality control — including screening for common contaminants such as mycoplasma, bacteria, and yeast — must be performed in accordance with established protocols when handling materials and stocks thawed from liquid nitrogen storage, ensuring that cells do not exceed recommended passage limits during in vitro culture. In addition, researchers employ various analytical techniques, such as immunofluorescence and quantitative analysis, to characterize phenotype and signaling dynamics across different anatomical regions, ranging from the thoracic vasculature to the abdominal aorta.

Historically and in contemporary research, Chicken Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (CAOSMC) have been used to investigate atherosclerosis-relevant mechanisms and pathways involved in atherogenesis and restenosis, and have been used with viral gene-delivery approaches (e.g., adenoviral vectors) in some studies. By modeling these processes — such as monitoring smooth muscle cell proliferation or examining cellular health — these vsmc cultures support broader investigations into vascular disease, hypertension, and mechanistic aspects relevant to aneurysm-like pathology (e.g., proliferation, phenotype switching, and cellular health), with each experimental result offering valuable comparative insights into smooth muscle cell biology across species.

Chicken Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells (CAOSMC) from Cell Applications, Inc. have been used in early avian models of atherosclerosis to elucidate molecular mechanisms and pathways involved in atherogenesis and restenosis and allowed for the development of an efficient and specific adenovirus-based gene transfer system.
