Human Lung Fibroblasts

(HLF)

Human Lung Fibroblasts (HLF) are derived from normal human lung parenchyma. They are cryopreserved at first passage and can be cultured and propagated at least 12 population doublings.

Studies show HLF play a pivotal role in airway inflammation and it may be an important target for drugs used in asthma¹. Fibroblast-based assay was used for screening of new antimicrobial drugs². Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) was found to completely down-regulate EGF receptor on the surface of fetal HLF³. Thrombin contributes to bronchoalveola lavage fluid mitogenicity in lung disease of the premature infant⁴. Pseudomonas autoinducer N-(3-oxododecanoyl) homoserine lactone induces cyclooxygenase-2 and prostaglandin E2 production in HLF important for inflammation and immune defenses⁵. Studies also show cigarette smoke extract added to the medium induces growth inhibition of HLF⁶.
